Beira
is a beautiful region in north-center Portugal. From the more
oriental dry lands to the Atlantic coasts this great viticultural
region includes several wine denominations. Precisely one of the most
Atlantic is Bairrada DOC,
between Viseu and the
academical Coimbra city.
Calcareous clay soils are predominant, especially clayey. The
alluvial soils are also present, witness of rivers like Levira
or Certima. Catanhede
is the village where Kompassus winery
are located, whose winemaker Anselmo Mendes has chosen Arinto
– Bical – Cercial
– María Gomes
(5o %) grape varieties for this wine :
Lemon
yellow color that shows evolution and hardly tears (12 % vol.
alcool only). A very intense nose a priori: the broom, yellow
flower... wild flower in short. With the evolution it manifests
mineral touchs. Round entrance in mouth, broad and fresh development
after. The tension goes from less to more and puts the structure.
Mouth notes for ripe citrus fruits and white stone fruit at its point
of ripeness putting the roundness. Present the spice, the mount grass
and even a saline note that evokes the Atlantic breezes. A very
good elegance, and a bitter finish that evokes the herbal and
grapefruit with a great persistence.
A great
personality white wine. From the proven, a mixture of the
Tras-os-Montes
(Behind-the-mountains) wines with that almost marine influence of the
Atlantic through those saline notes so positive. A great value for
money as always is in Portuguese wines. In this case around
6 € / $ 7. Its good
acidity allows a guard of 3/4 years to be served at 11º C to enjoy
its minerality. As a traditional pairing I propose a Marinated Trout
with potatoes (typical dish of Beira Alta). As a second pairing and
without leaving Beira I propose a Cod 'Assis style' with vegetables.
And as a third pairing ... travel to Coimbra and enjoy the Bairrada
wines with the local fish.
