Crama Cotnari Tamâioasa Românească sweet 2022 (Romania): romanian Sauternes at a very democratic price

Cotnari is the most famous Romanian white wine region in the West. And that is due to several factors: its location on the foothills of the Carpathians, which protects the vineyards from the cold winds of central Europe. The consequence of this is a temperate but humid climate ideal for the ripening and over-ripening of grapes. Therefore, we are facing the best sweet wine region in Romania, a Slavic Sauternes spice ideal for blue cheeses, foie and desserts.

Straw yellow color with greenish reflections, which confirms its recent vintage. We uncorked it at the end of 2023. Very perfumed: we mainly find floral and peach memories. Afterwards, notes of honey, citrus, leechi, pollen are added, all in an orgy of unstoppable sensations. In the mouth, sweet entry but not cloying. Superb balance between sweetness and freshness, which reminds us that this wine has a northern soul. Light step (12% vol.), with controlled density. Very feminine and easy to drink. Finish with a splash of white stone fruit syrup, which leaves a great taste in the mouth.

A wine that reminds us at all times that it shares latitude with the vineyards of northern Burgundy, Touraine, Burgenland Austria or Washington. The nose confirms that this variety undoubtedly belongs to the Muscat family, if not Muscat itself. ITS price of 4.60 euros is very Romanian and competes very worthily with the sweets from Malaga, Frontignan, Setubal and Thyrnavos. In short, highly recommended. It will shine with blue cheeses with character and desserts based on chocolate and fruit.

  1. Grasa Cotnari is a grape I knew nothing about, but now I'll drink more often.
