Matthieu Barrett …et la Bannière 2020 (AOC Crozes-Hermitages)

Matthieu Barrett is a french-born winemaker and viticulturist. He has worked in the wine industry for over 20 years, specializing in Rhône Valley and Burgundy. He is the founder of Matthieu Barrett Wines ( Domaine du Coulet for friends ), a small winery in the central Rhône Valley. He is known for his innovative winemaking techniques and his commitment to producing high-quality Rhône wines. Its cuvée '...and the flag' is a 100% Syrah from David Reynaud's vines, 25 years old (the vines, not David).

We see the classic medium-high opacity of Shiraz, with a youthful meniscus still having been uncorked two years after its harvest. The red tears, yes. A first intense nose for the black fruits on its bush after the rain. Second nose for the floral touches of the Syrah and a discreet minerality. Entry into the mouth dense and rich balanced with a good freshness thanks to a whole bunch vinification. Development that is a jet of black fruit on a background of violet and spices. The breadth stands out and it is not heavy (12% vol.). In short fruit always.

Mr. Barrett is considered the master of Syrah in France and is capable of proposing different styles: from juicy to powerful, including concentrated, spiced and mineral one. All the registers of this grape are controlled and in La Bannière the cement is chosen instead of wood for an elegant, dense and rich result. In restoration, this vintage costs 55 euros, but it is normally worth half. As main match we could propose a Beef fillet Rossini style with port wine jus. In second place we suggest a Veal Chop, Rhône valley Mushroom sauce.
