Domaine le Colombier blanc 2021 (AOC Vacqueyras): the whites of the southern Rhône begin to wake up

The Vacqueyras wine region (Vaucluse province nº 84) whites are growing more and more. In an area of great sunshine dominated by reds (with red Grenache in the head), the richness of Vacqueyras soils is allowing the orientation towards quality whites. By the way, the dentelles of Montmirail range mountain have an impressive landscape so near to Rhône valley. My friend Jean-Louis Mourre has chosen sandstone soils to produce a wine where Viognier, Marsanne and white Grenache almost share the assemblage.

Visually, its density already stands out, its vocation to receive all the light of the Provençal sun and convert it into glycerol. Straw yellow without defects. On the nose, the register of ripe fruit hints stands out, more specifically the white stone ones such as peaches and apricots, on a floral and herbal background. Once in the mouth the density returns. Its roundness and breadth reveal that the vintage has been baked under the southern sun. The exotic fruit and those with white flowers remain in the mouth for a long time after the drink. It will be yours for about 20 euros.

The 54 acres of the domaine are worked organically, which gives a clean and responsible result with the health of the final consumer. Each variety gives what is asked of it: Viognier the aromatic, Marsanne the body and white Grenache the echoes of dill and fennel. Although it is difficult to find in these wines the freshness of other French whites, the result is optimal and recommended. The pairing is regional cuisine in all its breadth, we especially recommend some peppers stuffed with summer vegetables, topped with grated Feta cheese and mountain rosemary.
